I use the VMware Hands on Labs quite a bit, and today (5th September 2013) I noticed that they have put the first of the 2013 VMware Hands On Labs on line.
HOL-SDC-1302 – VSPHERE DISTRIBUTED SWITCH FROM A TO Z
Explore features of the vSphere Distributed Switch from beginning to advanced perspectives. There are modules that explore QoS and ERSPAN and others that provide a basic introduction to the vSphere Distributed Switch. If you want to explore vSphere networking, this is your lab.
HOL-SDC-1304 – vSphere Performance Optimization
The vSphere Performance lab is a perennial favourite and this year is no exception. There is content for all levels of expertise and multiple tracks through the lab. The optional modules at the end allow you to customize your lab experience around topics of interest to you. Be sure to take the lab more than once so that you can experience all of the modules.
HOL-SDC-1308 – Virtual Storage Solutions
VMware Virtual SAN pools compute and direct-attached storage resources and clusters server disks and flash to create resilient shared storage. This idea is so cool, you just have to see it in action! Get your first taste of this exciting new technology in this Hands-on Lab, then visit vmware.com to sign up for the free beta.
HOL-MBL-1301-AZ – Horizon View from A to Z
VMware Horizon View is changing the way that companies manage their desktop systems. This lab includes a beginning-level guided tour module as well as advanced troubleshooting and optimization content. See what all of the buzz is about and try out Horizon View.

On Friday night 30th August 2013 I sat my VCA-DCV exam and passed.
The VCA-DCV stands for VMware Certified Associate – Data Center Virtualisation
So, here’s how I prepped and passed the exam.
The training material is available free of charge from VMware’s education website.
The course is called VMware Data Center Virtualisation Fundamentals and is a self-paced 2.5 hour web delivered course.
Once through the course, the next step is to register and then sit the exam.
The exam is available via Pearson VUE (costs £80 plus VAT £88, but book now and get 50% discount, comes to £48), but is delivered direct to your browser, the exam lasts 90 minutes and consists of 50 multiple choice questions.

VMware have just released a new tier of certification, the new tier is the associate level.
The associate certification becomes the entry level certification. Whether you simply want to become more conversant in virtualization technologies or ultimately want to be a recognized virtualization expert, VMware certification is now an essential step for your career.
The new certification comes in three different fields, with the fourth coming soon.
VCA-DCV Data Center Virtualisation
VCA-WM Workforce Mobility
VCA-Network Virtualisation (coming soon)
For more info visit the VMware Certification Web Site.
Also available from VMware is a nice little PDF that explains the VMware Certification Roadmap.
